About Curiosity Mapped
Curiosity is where it starts.
Curiosity Mapped is an exploration platform for understanding the things that shape our world.
It began with a simple question:
What happens when curiosity doesn’t stop at the question?
A question can lead to an explanation.
An explanation can reveal a system.
A system can reveal connections.
And sometimes, understanding those connections gives us the ability to build something better.
That is the space Curiosity Mapped is interested in.
From curiosity to investigation
I tend to have a hard time encountering something without eventually wanting to understand what is underneath it.
Not just what something does, but why it works, what assumptions it depends on, what influences it, where it breaks, and what happens when the variables change.
That way of thinking is at the heart of Curiosity Mapped.
A calculator should not only give you a number. It should help you understand where the number came from.
A reference should not only give you a definition. It should help you understand the thing behind the word.
A research question should not only produce an answer. It should lead to better questions.
And a useful idea should not necessarily remain an idea. Sometimes it should become something that can be built, tested, used, and improved.
Curiosity Mapped exists to explore that entire process.
Mapping the systems underneath things
The world is full of systems that are easy to interact with and surprisingly difficult to understand.
- Money.
- Technology.
- Nature.
- Infrastructure.
- Energy.
- Information.
- Computation.
- Human behavior.
- The systems we build to organize all of them.
We often encounter these systems through simplified interfaces. A number on a screen. A button. A chart. A rule. A product. A website.
Those abstractions are useful, but they can also hide what is actually happening.
Curiosity Mapped tries to pull some of those layers back.
That might mean explaining the mathematics behind a financial calculation, examining how a technology works, exploring a scientific concept, investigating a real-world system, or building an interactive tool that lets you experiment with the variables yourself.
The goal isn’t to make everything complicated.
It is to make the important complexity visible when it matters.
Useful first. Deeper if you want it.
Not every question needs a research paper.
Sometimes you just need the answer.
That’s why Curiosity Mapped includes practical tools, calculators, references, explanations, and other resources designed to be useful immediately.
But there should always be somewhere deeper to go.
You might come here looking for a mortgage calculation and leave understanding amortization.
You might look up a term and end up exploring the system it belongs to.
You might use a conversion tool and become curious about why the conversion works in the first place.
That transition from use → understanding → curiosity is intentional.
Curiosity Mapped is meant to reward going one question further.
Science, technology, nature, and what comes next
The subjects here are intentionally broad.
Science helps us understand the world.
Technology gives us new ways to interact with it.
Nature reminds us that we are part of systems much larger than ourselves.
And imagination gives us a way to explore what those systems could become.
That means Curiosity Mapped can move between practical calculations, technical tools, scientific concepts, research, data, emerging technology, speculative ideas, and stories.
The subjects may look different.
The underlying question is usually the same:
How does this work, and what could we do with a better understanding of it?
Building better questions
I don’t think curiosity is valuable simply because knowing more is valuable.
I think curiosity becomes powerful when it changes what we are capable of seeing and doing.
Understanding a system can reveal an opportunity.
Understanding a constraint can reveal a different approach.
Understanding a problem can reveal that we were asking the wrong question in the first place.
Sometimes the most interesting discovery isn’t an answer.
It’s realizing that the map we were using was incomplete.
That’s what the name Curiosity Mapped means to me.
We are constantly creating mental maps of the world.
Some are mathematical.
Some are scientific.
Some are technological.
Some are personal.
Some are completely wrong.
The purpose isn’t to create a perfect map.
It’s to keep exploring, keep testing the map against reality, and keep expanding it.
What Curiosity Mapped is becoming
Curiosity Mapped is still being built.
The long-term vision is broader than a collection of web pages or utilities.
It is a place where tools, knowledge, research, data, experiments, ideas, and eventually people can connect.
A place where someone can arrive with a practical problem and discover something deeper.
A place where someone can arrive with a strange question and find a path toward investigating it.
A place where useful knowledge doesn’t have to be separated from wonder.
And eventually, a place where curiosity can become collaborative.
Because I don’t think exploration has to be solitary.
Someone asks a question.
Someone else knows something.
Someone builds a tool.
Someone finds a connection.
Someone challenges an assumption.
Someone discovers that the original question wasn’t quite the right one.
The map gets a little larger.
Reimagining what we can build
There is a broader reason I am building this.
I think we have become very good at building systems that optimize for what can be measured, sold, scaled, or extracted.
I’m more interested in what happens when we also optimize for understanding, usefulness, resilience, exploration, and the quality of human life.
Clean water matters.
Food matters.
Shelter matters.
Medicine matters.
Reliable infrastructure matters.
Knowledge matters.
The technology we create around those things matters.
I don’t have a single answer for how all of those systems should work.
I don’t think anyone does.
But I think understanding the systems we have is a good place to start.
Then we can ask better questions about what comes next.
Curiosity Mapped is my attempt to build a place for that process.
Explore something useful.
Follow the question.
Understand the system.
Find the connection.
Build something.
Then ask:
What if?
